The Day In-Between…

Every Christian knows the story about Good Friday and Easter Sunday. As we prepare for Easter, I wonder about the Day in-between. I know it is considered the Holy Saturday. I know the disciples and followers of Christ rested and observed the Jewish tradition on that day. But I wonder what they must have been thinking and how they felt.
You see, they had watched Jesus hang on the cross. They watched Him suffer. They watched Him take his last breath. Yes, Jesus had told them He would come back. But, I wonder how many people that followed Christ understood the significance of what happened. Matthew 16:21, “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.“
Matthew 23:54-56 tells us that the women could not complete the preparation of Jesus body. “It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.”
Holy Saturday is meant to be a time of reflection. To prepare our hearts for the worship and glorious celebration that is Easter Sunday. It is also meant as a reminder of the significance and importance of what Jesus death, burial, and resurrection truly means for you and I as Christians.
I wonder how they felt? I wonder what they thought about? They must have felt great sadness as they reflected on His death and absence from their lives. I am sure they grieved as they did not understand just what His death and life meant for the world. We know how the story ended. They lived the story and I wonder how they viewed the Day in-between.
