Unchanging…

When I left for work this morning, I watched an airplane fly across the sky from northeast to southeast leaving a trail behind. As I studied the sky, I saw a second contrail just below, bright at first, but slowly fading. I noticed a bright dot in the morning sky. At first, I thought it might be the ISS. As I drove along, the image shifted and appeared to move from under the contrails through them to above as in the image. Duh, I realized the object in the morning sky was not moving, I was. My angle had shifted, and my view was changing.
You see, God is unchanging. The first part of Malachi 3:6 says “I the LORD do not change.”. I particularly like what Bibletools.org says about the meaning of this scripture. “God's mind is absolutely undivided. In practical application, this means that His sovereignty can never be separated from His love; His grace cannot be separated from His omniscience; His judgment cannot be separated from either His mercy or His wrath. God is absolutely constant because His faithful providence cannot be separated from any other of His attributes. God is whole and complete. Under every circumstance, He is never confused or uncertain about what to do. He is always headed in the same direction, which is to complete His purpose.”
The image in the sky was Venus, it does move, but God doesn’t. I move, but God doesn’t. I am comforted by the knowledge that Lamentations 3:22-23 provides, “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.“
As my life progresses, I have developed a deeper understanding of just what that verse means in my life. What it means to serve a God who is constant, consistent, faithful and unchanging. A God whose word is always the same. Deuteronomy 7:9, “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,”.
