A Quiet Laughter…9-9-25

I sometimes sit back and watch others as they laugh and talk with ease. I have never been able to do this. Very rarely have I laughed with freedom and abandon, unconcerned with anything. The side splitting, tummy hurting, snorting, giggling, tears falling from your eyes crying laughter. I want to do this. I sometimes want to be this free. My good friend at church says she will get that out of me some day. I can see it in her face, her manner, her eyes. I know she has that laughter. My husband and I have friends that we do things with occasionally. I know of a few times that I really let go, the snorting laugh and giggles. But most of the time it just doesn’t come natural. Why?

I have a quiet laughter. A quiet contentment that comes from years of holding in and being serious, but it is there. I am content. I love deeply. I love with my whole being. I care deeply, and I do have joy.

My grandson and I have come to terms with his silliness, and my smirk. He knows his Moppy fills up so deep with joy at his antics that it is hard for him to be serious at bedtime. He knows he can make me laugh and smile. Then he is awake for a while longer as we settle back down.

My point is this. Don’t always judge a book by the outside cover. My cover should read “serious fuddy duddy”. My insides sometimes scream for laughter and conversation, for love. But, praise God, there is joy.

Psalm 16:11, “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” My Lord is my joy and strength. My Lord gives me a quiet laughter that understands even more than my words could ever express. My Lord knows my heart. He knows my innermost thoughts. I know my quiet laughter is from God.

Isaiah 55:12: “You will live in joy and peace. The mountains and hills will burst into song, and the trees of the field will clap their hands!”
