If you know me, you know I don't like spiders. One very large spider crawled across my classroom floor this week. I immediately said, "kill it". Two students quickly jumped up, one boy with his feet ready to stomp. The other, a girl, quickly knelt down to pick it up. I immediately told her to get back. She became upset because she didn't want me to have it done away with. She said it was living and didn't deserve to die. I very quickly pointed to her to step back, and to him to "kill it". (We do have a few bad spiders around. Although this probably wasn't one.) He was happy, and she pouted the rest of the class period because I am a spider-killer.
Seeing this web, I am reminded at the two perspectives of my students. One, understood the danger the spider posed. The other, unconcerned by danger, but upset her voice was not dominant in this situation. I can see the devil influencing people to ignore common-sense and to follow their desires.
1 Peter 5:8, "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." I pray for our young people today. They are so impressionable. They are easily led astray. Now, I'm not saying spiders don't deserve to live. I'm saying the distress after the situation speaks of a viewpoint that doesn't allow common-sense. The depth of distress that I didn't concede to demand is indicative of one who could be very easily swayed by our feel-good, "me" society.
1 Timothy 4:12, "Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron." My sweet grandson, I pray you stay true in your faith. Do not be deceived by those who will work to separate you from the Lord and His word. Stay strong and watch for the webs that will trap you.
