My students in one class asked me a question last week, "Mrs. Lowrey, are you a Valentine?" At first, I did not know what they meant. Then after a few seconds of thought, I realized they were asking me if I had a Valentine. I said, "Yes, my husband." They said, "Has he asked you?" To this, I fully began to realize that Valentine's Day to them is an expression of your affection for someone. That might be platonic love of a friend or family member, or a romantic love as in boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse. "It provides an opportunity to openly express feelings of love and appreciation towards a significant other." Now remember, these are 8th and 9th graders. They are hormonal and most of them are social. Over the past week, the talk of Valentine has escalated. They asked if my husband was going to send me flowers. I told them we don't do holiday flowers because it is ridiculously expensive. I explained I would rather have a plant to put in the ground, watch grow, and remember someone special. Of course, there were sounds of "awes" all over the room to this declaration. Another day, the conversation involved what I would get him (my husband). I told them we didn't get gifts. I would cook him a favorite meal. They thought that was acceptable. I passed the romantic love test, I guess!

God showed His love for us in a declaration. He made a profound and everlasting statement. This statement was for all the world to see, not hidden behind "anonymous" or simple words. The actions spoke with the thunder that day. The world knew that Jesus was God's son. Even the centurion said, "Truly this was the Son of God!”. We have this act of selfless love as a reminder that God's precious love for us is Great and Everlasting. John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life." Over 2000 years ago, God made this sacrifice. He gave us a gift so precious that it will never be matched. I am humbled at the thought that I am chosen by God. God profoundly showed His love with the death of His son to cover our sins. The Cross is my reminder that I am loved. I am forgiven. I am chosen. I am His...
