Communication…7-18-25

When my husband and I began dating 43 years ago, I didn’t understand love. I had never seen it in action between a husband and wife. Love wasn’t in our home. Communication wasn’t part of my daily life. Ridicule, accusations, insults, verbal abuse, and yelling instead of talking was the norm. I had begun to see a different side of family life with the woman who took me in and her grown children. I watched, hoped, prayed, and began to learn about God and love.

My husband-to-be and I spent countless hours laying on a blanket looking at the stars and just talking. We talked about what we wanted to do after graduation, life, our fears, disappointments, future, and shared dreams. We spent five years building that relationship and communicating. God knew that I would need that trust and time to understand what a family should be, so different from what mine was. As we communicated and talked with each other through college, letters, phone calls, weekend and holidays, our perspectives and thoughts evolved and changed. One thing was constant, we knew we loved each other. We were both saved and new what that meant within our lives.

You see, our relationship evolved and grew through communication, listening, understanding, and knowledge. When we spend time in thoughtful communication with the Lord, that relationship does the same. Deuteronomy 30:20, “Love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.” If we want to build that relationship, we put in time studying God’s word, and reading scripture. Joshua 1:8, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

In Jeremiah 33:3, we see the two-way communication with God. “Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” I call on Him, and He talks to me. Just as my husband and I have grown in our knowledge and understanding over the years, so does my relationship with God.
