Covered…

My husband and I love to watch the daily routine of our animal friends as we drink our coffee in the morning. In fact, as I sit with my cup, typing, a squirrel has made its way to the peach tree. The Indian Peach Tree is loaded and the animals are healthy, happy, and maybe a little plump from all the goodness.
One morning my husband was sitting on the porch watching the rain, drinking coffee. I was gone on a trip. He loves to tell this story, and I hate that I missed it. I would have been taking pictures. One of the squirrels jumped from trunk to limb carefully making its way to the desired peach. After finding the perfect one, the squirrel then made his way to the ground. Instead of staying in the tree under the cover of the leaves to eat the fruit, the squirrel went to the nearby fence post. Exposed to the elements, the rain coming down, the squirrel put its tail over his head. Now I can picture this squirrel sitting on the top of the wooden fence post, tail hanging over his head like an umbrella, and happily eating his bounty. The seed still sits on the post a few weeks later.
Oh, there are so many things I think of with this image. I see how God created care for all creatures even in moments such as these. I see the beauty in this simple image of the rain pouring, but the animal covered and being fed with what God has provided. I see the image of the peach pit as it remains, a symbol of new life as it will fall to the ground and reproduce.
Psalm 91:4, “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
You see, even as the rain pours, God provides a safe place. This may not seem like a safe place to me, out in the open, on top of a fence, with the rain pouring, but God knew the covering needed for that moment. He knows what we need, when we need it. God knows what type of covering, what will happen, and gives us that needed protection. I am covered by the blood of Christ.
This is one of the most precious scripture for me. I take refuge in the words as a blanket that covers my soul. Psalm 27:1-14, ”The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple. For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble; He will conceal me under the cover of His tent; He will lift me high upon a rock. ...“ I am covered.
