Looking Back…

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana, The Life of Reason, 1905. People have commented about “the good ole days” for years. Many people have a desire to return to a time and place where life was simple, people knew right from wrong, and it seemed kindness was important and an essential character trait.
The Bible cautions against looking back in Ecclesiastes 7:10, “Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?” For it is not wise to ask such questions.”
I have no desire to go back to the days of my childhood and youth. However, I do understand why so many people feel like it was a safer and more peaceful time. I do look back and wish for the memories so many talk about. I have some regrets because I made a lot of mistakes. But I know in every mistake, God molded and shaped me.
You see, God doesn't want us longing for the past and not embracing His plan for us. God wants us moving forward to a life He has planned. I think it is okay to remember our past. But if we spend time wishing for what was, our future is marred by a lack of focus and commitment. We look back and miss so many blessings. Our past is our story that needs retold. Our past needs to be remembered to grow and learn. But, thank God we have a future that is beyond our comprehension. We have a living, present God who was, is, and will be a light unto our path and lamp unto our feet.
