Two Ears, Two Eyes, One Mouth…

A friend and I were talking this past week and she used this phrase above. Oh my goodness! Literally, we should see twice as much as we speak, and listen twice as much as we talk. Yet, the average person says over 860 million words in their lifetime. Hundreds of times in the Bible, we are warned about our speech and different kinds of speech. If you know me, and you should by now (my friends, those few, and blessed few, that read these words God lays on my heart), you know that I am intrigued and inspired by little things that I believe God uses to correct us, me!
So I’m going to give you some scriptural backing more in this blog than any other. Think about the ways in which we speak that are not pleasing to God. They cut me, convict me, and stop me to pray for forgiveness and to be more of what God wants.
Angry words, (Proverbs 12:16) (James 1:19–20)
Lies: (Psalm 5:6), (Ephesians 4:25)
Cutting Sarcasm: (Proverbs 26:18–19)
Gossip: (Proverbs 20:19), (Proverbs 10:18)
Flattery: (Proverbs 28:23), (1 Thessalonians 2:5)
Bragging: (Jeremiah 9:23), (2 Corinthians 10:17), (James 4:16)
Perverted and vulgar speech: (Ephesians 5:4), (Ephesians 4:29)
Profanity/Using God’s name in vain: (Exodus 20:7)
Speaking without thinking: (Proverbs 29:20, (James 1:19–20)
Complaining: (Titus 3:9–10), (Proverbs 20:3)
Talking too much: (Proverbs 10:19)
There are more, but WOW! I told my husband there are a couple of these (complaining, speaking without thinking) that get me sometimes way too much.
Yes, this is a reminder, my reminder that my speech should be pleasing. “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” Colossians 4:6.
