Why do people do what they do?

I am a research, continuing education, growth mindset geek. My cup of tea is sitting in a conference room listening and taking notes about the latest research, development, trends, and future outlooks in various fields, specifically education. So, when a friend asked me to attend a conference last year with her geared toward leadership, coaching, and counseling, I agreed. I loved the fact this conference is so biblically based. The speakers pray, they teach the Bible, and also give the analytics and data behind the need for faith based leaders, coaches, and counselors.

June Hunt is by far my favorite speaker. I attended again this year and was able to be in two more of her sessions. The question above, Why do people do what they do?, is one we all ask. We all ponder and we all shake our head at in wonder. If you are saved, the answer is easy. We are prayerfully attempting to follow God’s will. But, my second question. Why do I do what I don’t want to do? The Apostle Paul wrote this very question in Romans 7:15, "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do".

As I sat and listened, June explained we all have those innate needs for love, significance, security, but people fail. We are all born, but we are not all spiritually born. When we are spiritually born, God changes our desires. He changes us. A true authentic Christian will have different desires, different views of the significance than they had before.

You see, if you are born again, a child of God, you are FREE. You then Face the Truth, Realize what is right in God’s eyes, Exchange those desires for His desires, and Expect to have a new heart. Wow! Only Christ is your guaranteed hope for change.

Psalm 139, “Search me, God, and know my heart;”. Please read this beautiful scripture in Psalm. My cry and my plea for God to search and know me! Change me, O’ God!
