Everything Changes…

My grandson is spending at least part of most days with us this summer as his parents work. He wants to earn money for things and raking grass was something he willingly agreed to do. He raked up several small piles to be picked up. Burning these piles was my bright idea (epic fail). Of course, he loved trying to get them to burn, but there are now burnt spots in my yard. When I explained what I had done to my husband, he said this. “It’s okay. It will grow back next year. Everything changes, nothing stays the same.” My WOW moment.
You see, he is correct. Everything in life does change. Some of those changes are welcomed as in new grass where the black spots are now. Some things are unwelcome, as in losing someone you love and having to spend every day without them.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 tells us that everything changes. There is a season, a time and a place for everything, and then that season changes. A new season takes its place and we move on. “a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.”
I could write a book about each verse and how the contents of that verse have changed in my life. We all could. Maybe I will some day. I know just as the scripture says, “there is a time to be born and a time to die.” Each moment, each specific time should be embraced. Each time is a gift and what we do with that time is our choice. Everything does change except…
Yes, my husband is correct in that everything in this life changes. But, there is One who never changes. His love, His commandments, His scriptures, His promises, and His impending return will not change. Numbers 23:19, “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?”. One thing we can count on, He keeps His promises and that will not change. With that knowledge, I have comfort. As life changes, I am forever grateful that “my hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness.” (Edward Mote, 1984)
